I am translating sites from English to Chinese, Japanese and Spanish. I am interested in the SEO differences between:
1.www.domain.co.jp
2.jp.domain.com
3.www.domain-jp.com
This would be the Japanese version of the English page. I suspect that www.domain-jp.com is probably the best for Google in the long term, and that www.domain.co.jp is best for Google in the short term. I have no experience with subdomains (jp.domain.com).

Does Google frown on any of these?
Is one better for SEO in the search engines than another?

Since there is only one country where the Japanese language is an important language, Google Japan [google.co.jp] has no options for 'searching in Japan' AND 'searching in Japanese'. For Google Spain [google.es] or Google Germany [google.de] that's different.

For other Search Engines it could help to have a '.jp' domain (www.domain.co.jp or www.domain.jp). But these are more expensive and it might be harder to get one.

As for option 2 or 3 there is no big difference I guess. Maybe only in the way results are grouped in the SERP, but it's unlikely that an English and a Japanese page will end up in the SERP for the same query.
