Expired Domains and Google?

Does anybody know how Google keeps track of if a domain has changed owner? What I have read here in the past is that if a domain have a new owner the domain will start from 0 in google (backlinks and PR will not live on). Does anybody know wich topdomains Google does this for, is it .com .net and .org or do you think they do it for all topdomains?

I think nobody except the Google employees know what and how they do it.
For retrieving the data there are too many ways and there are also lots of unimportant tlds (ie edu) where it doesn't make sense to work with this data.

Google does not change its weighting of a domain's backlinks just because it has (or seems to have) a new owner. Otherwise there would be chaos when a domain was bought and sold, a registrant changed to her married name, etc. etc.

It's when someone picks up a domain that has actually expired that Google tries to devalue the "legacy links".

I have one expired domain I bought which has been under penalty for a year (even though [e-mail] replies to say that they do not do that.)

I bought a domain that I later realised was PR0 and worried that it was banned or penalized or worse. So Google was far from my marketing strategy for that site. To my suprise, first PR update came along, I went to PR4, and google sends its fair share of traffic. You shouldnt have too much to worry about.

I agree with optisoft somewhat! Expired domains are PR0 initially. This is because of the redemption period and stuf because the domain does not resolve in that period till the pending delete and final deletion. But once u hav ethe domain, I feel it picks up PR in 4-6 weeks depending upon the links u may have.

Not what Google does to prevent this is still a mystery.

I bought a domain (just for the domain, not for the PR), that didnīt lost itīs PR.
Registering a domain just for the PR is like gambling. You donīt know what will happen, so I donīt do it. Only if I like the domain, and the previous owner really donīt the domain anymore.
So I guess this depends...
