Why does my site has very little backlinks, but competitor`s site has more than 380 backlinks?

The two site were created nearly at the same time, and both of the sites are search engine optimized, the only difference is that competitor`s website is linked with a very high traffic site on every page, my site is linked with some small sites. Is this is the key reason that my site does not have good ranking and does not have many backlinks?

Follow their backlinks and go after them.

They have almost done the work for you. Depending on what sector you are in you may find that the backlinks are part of their network of sites in which case it wil be more difficult to get the links.

Without doubt more links wil help you especially if you get anchor text that related to your content.

My strategy is as follows:

1. Set results to 100 per page.
2. Find all the backlinks to a competitor.
3. Copy and paste to a word document.
4. Systematically contact each site in turn Iif appropriate) to ask for a link.
5. Note the date of request, the email address contacted, and any result on the word document.

I don't offer a reciprocal link unless the other site asks for it, but then I'm in a nonprofit field and can get away with this.
