how to find position in google without paging

I'm sure i should know this but i dont.

If you are position 5000 in google for a particular key phrase is there any clever way to find that out without a search through 500 pages looking for the relevant page?

Not possible without using software Google doesn't want you to use. And, under no circumstance can you display beyond the first 1,000 results or so. Which is fine, since how many searchers will look beyond 1,000 results? ;)

You may use the official googleapi.
It lets you do 1000 automated searches a day.
However, you need some programming skills ;)

The easiest way to search thru Google's results or anyone's for that matter is with the Google toolbar.

1. Using Google, set default search results per page to 100, which is the maximum.
   
2. Run search for desired keyword / keyword phrase.
   
3. Type domain name blue-widgets.tld into the toolbar search field on the left, but do **not** click on the binoculars.
   
4. Instead click on the phrase blue-widgets.tld on the right side of the toolbar, which will highlight your listing, if it is on that page.
   

Forget about #5000. If you're not in the first couple hundred results, then you shouldn't even waste any more time checking your ranking. Instead, you should put some more time into building up your content and PR.

I do have a separate suggestion. Removing the link to your site from your sig line is not only the correct thing to do, it would save a moderator the trouble of doing it for you. Self-promotion is anti-TOS.

They don't penalize the site typically. They block the misbehaving IP address from using Google. In some cases they can verify the site involved and the penalty is severe.

This isn't what you're looking for, but it's the fastest legit tool I know for digging deep into Google serps... 100 at a time, without snippets, descriptions, urls, etc...

If anyone knows how to get it to return visible urls along with the titles, that for me would make it more useful yet.

The reason for the question was like everyone else i'm sure i always get clients who want to be number one for a key phrase for which there are 3M entries in google and it is good to be able to show the dire position we are starting from. Not being in the top 1000 is enough data.

re the sig i think its already gone - or i cant find it anymore in options so i consider myself soundly slapped. Probably not reading the TOS is enough reason to be in breach of TOS. :-)

re - the 5000 i made a high number to avoid comments about "dont be so lazy go look"

I knew this question was going to come up. The clustering on 100 results is different from the clustering on 10. Someone else with more time can explain this in more detail. I tried briefly to get more than 100 results on a page, but 100 seems to be the max.

Otherwise, I think the results are regular www results. I would guess you could adapt the url to work with any data center, but I haven't tried it.

there is also at least one site out there that makes use of the google api, where you sign up for a license and their tool will track all rankings/sites for you. there is no cost right now.

There's also that Belgian one that lets you do compact results in 100s across a selection of datacentres. Just search for google tool and look for the first Belgian site.

There is a website i can sticky to you that uses google api . you can use this 1000 times a day google allows it.
Ive been using this for about the last 3 months and is right on the money everytime. It also lets you choose as many keywords that you are tracking . Right now myself im tracking 26 keywords using this site . There is no penalty
for this as long as you use google's api .all you have to do is email google and get your api no. and plug it in.

Getting more than 1000 results....

Use the Advanced Search button

Do various advanced searches (eg pages updated in last three months, or only .org)

Save all the search results

Merge them together with a bit of scripting magic. You'll have (more or less) relative rankings for perhaps as far out as 5000 results.

The numbers aren't absolutely guaranteed, but they are indicative.

Much easier to use the API to get the results than to try it by hand with Advanced Search.
