Hidden in this interview,
According to Page, Google has passed the 4 billion — page mark since then.)

Also,

Meanwhile, in the real world, Google has just finished moving its 1,300 employees into new headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., previously the offices of former Silicon Valley golden boy (and current Silicon Valley crater) Silicon Graphics.

©2003 Google - Searching 3,307,998,701 web pages

They really need to update the home page then. ;)

GoogleGuy sometimes mentioned that he had used new functionality before the public would see it. They might not only use what we see.

Maybe the 4 billion are early hints for new data coming in?

Does it matter if it's 4 or 40 if the results are crap?
Google forgot.. it's quality that matters, not quantity.

Is there any estimation on how much % of TOTAL web pages googles has in its stomach?

I estimate google has in its index between 70 and 80% of all the web content.

Nobody really know how many pages there are on the web.

A main problem are duplicates.

From what I have read it must be more than 10 billion pages.

Not entirely. Quantity matters too. If you have a large site with diverse content, then all those deep pages, as a whole, can bring in better traffic than your index page. The deep pages may rank a lot better too.
