Hi

As the subject says, in one month I would be due to renew the $299 for Yahoo yearly fee

I have very clear that it really dont worth the money as such as Yahoo no even got the decency to show their paid for urls in their search results.
On the other hand, I have always paid because when checking for backlinks to my site in Google, the link to my site from Yahoo directory was always at the very top of my backlinks.

This link from Yahoo's directory is now not longer showing (not at the top not anywhere) when I check my Googles backlinks

So the question is:
Can anybody answer whether perhaps Google is not longer giving extra importance to a link from Yahoo?

If this is the case, then SURELY does not worth renewing the Yahoo fee

Thanks very much in advance

There never has been any "extra importance" to Yahoo links.

With the new emphasis on authority, a Yahoo link might possibly be worth more than a generic link now. Probably not, but possibly.

Your link may stay in Yahoo even if you don't renew :)

Maybe the PR of the yahoo page dropped below 4?

I think it all boils down to how much traffic you're getting from that site. If you're not getting much traffic, it might not be worth it to renew. And as others have mentioned, yahoo may forget to delist you anyway =)

I have a link in the Yahoo Directory on 2 of my sites.

For my major keyword on 1 of the 2 sites.

Google #133

Yahoo #15

The other site with the Yahoo Directory listing is newer might be why its not effected.

But I think for me, showing #15 in Yahoo and #133 in Google is because of my Directory link.

I use to be #1 on both Yahoo and Google.

Thanks to everybody for the answers

Definitely a Yahoo link used to have more importance than a normal link

Have you guys (those who say they may dont delist the site even if not renewing) heard of this happening in the past AFTER the $299 mandatory submittion fee? I think January 2001

And replying to the other question (sorry but I cant remember all names)..yes my site is number 1 in Google and this is why I am considering renewing to Yahoo even when my site is only showing in Yahoo because of Google but not because of my fee

The only reason I don't pay for a Yahoo Listing is you got in, teh title of your listing in the SERPS of Yahoo will become the edited one (the one that get into the directory) - Which is usually a lot shorter and not attractive.

I rather have my orginal google title showing. And I can change it whenever I want!

$300/yr means about $1/day

People regularly pay 5c-10c (or more) per click for CPC ads.

So if your Yahoo listing can provide 20 click thrus/day, that's like paying 5c/click. If your Yahoo listing can provide 100 click thrus/day, that's like paying 1c/click. And anything beyond that is dirt cheap advertising.

Why pay for renewal?

Most likely it will remain in the directory even if you don't pay and in the case it is removed from the directory, you can always get back in by paying the renewal fee.

I don't know much about this system and am not a lawyer but this is what some people would probably do.

Yes, a site was submitted a couple of months after this date and the renewal was cancelled. It is a risk though as your link may be removed.

Does anybody even surf through the yahoo directory to find things any more? $300 always seemed very steep to me considering all the hits I get from yahoo come through the search engine part of it (yes, a couple of my sites are in the directory, from freebie listings).

Yes. I submitted in October 2002. I was trying to decide whether or not to renew. Then, about 5 days before my renewal date, I got an email saying my listing had been cancelled. When I checked, I saw that the credit card number I had used to place the order no longer existed - it had been replaced by a new credit card number.

So I waited to see what would happen, knowing that I could renew if they didn't leave me in. I'm still in (just checked again to be sure). My renewal date was in October.

My site has more educational content than commercial, so that might have been a factor.

Thanks again to everybody for all responses. Very helpul

I suppose I will not renew them and if taken off and this affects my Google results then I will renew again.
At the end of the day, I DO NOT receive a single hit from Yahoo other than these coming from my listing in Google

I will post back updating yours (and others) of what happened.
My listing is due for renewal middle of January

In my case the yahoo listing paid off in a short time only because of referrals from their search, which shows some directory results first.

"In my case the yahoo listing paid off in a short time only because of referrals from their search, which shows some directory results first."
--------------------------------

Am I missing anything here?

Yahoo directory listings USED to appear first on the search results looong ago but this no longer happnes.

Not that long ago, Yahoo started mixing the results (not giving more importance to one over the other) only that they were somehow identifying which results were from their directory

Today, and this is happening for sometime now, directory listing DOES NOT shows at all.
Any listing showing is only and exclusively regarding its position in Google results and if in any case such listing exist in the Yahoo directory this is simply a coincidence

Or at least what I say above is the behaviour that I am observing for many months and months

Am I wrong?

>exclusively regarding its position in Google results <

>Am I worong?<

Kind of. Some search results that are returned by Y! are clearly not Google results and look to be driven from the directory. "Furniture" is a good example of this.

Long term business and not a throw away domain? I would pop for a Y! directory listing for sure.

Am I wrong?

Kind of.

For some searches directory results are listed first, for some not.

Anyway, the site I talked about also got plenty of referrals from Yahoo directory.

It all depends on the category.

ALSO, Yahoo is supposed to stop using Google for it's search results very soon now. Yahoo's directory listings may once again play a prominant role in Yahoo searches.

exactly dirkz,

If you in a small category you will do well with yahoo, however i have never paid for a yearly listing, you would do better with a regional listing as this shows up in the main results and of course is still a one off fee.
We do well with yahoo, always have.
