Hi,

Just a quick question - is there any value in page rank terms in promoting a site (eg listing in a directory like DMOZ) that is a subdomain of your site BUT does not link to you?

for example www.webhost.com is the main site and client.webhost.com is the client site - any point listing the client in theird party directories (specifically for page rank)?

There are sites like www.ispsites.com/membersite/ that are doing just fine, rankings, PR and all, and don't link to the ispsite nor are they linked back to. They're independent, individually run sites and merit the same promotion effort as any other site. But their PR comes strictly from their own site, not the "mother" site.

Not much difference between yoursite.example.com and www.example.com/yoursite/ they're both valid.

No, they wouldn't get PR benefit from the hosting site without a link. PR is conferred by links to individual pages, not conferred by where a site sits in physical location.

I am trying to inc the page rank of the www.webhost.com - not the client.webhost.com ....

but your point still stands i guess.

pity.

cheers.

I heard some rumour of people having higher than expected page ranks because they were hosted by geocities - i thought it might be possible to take advantage of this by encouraging our clients to list their websites in DMOZ etc.

"higher than expected page ranks because they were hosted by geocities"

There is zero truth to that. The "rumor" is based on seeing guessed pagerank.

There are no shortcuts. Links transfer pr. That's it.

Know what, Jim? I've also heard "rumors" about Geocities sites doing better than expected. But theoretically, according to how PR works, that shouldn't have anything to do with it.

I certainly haven't been seeing that.

rfg, I am seeing it with Yahoo stores, and have been for a while. Makes me think about Local Rank.
