My new website was recently listed on Google. Google however is listing my site as a Fishing Magazine (Recreation > Outdoors > Fishing > Magazines and E-zines)
My company deals in tech services.
How does Google determine the category and what can I do to get it listed correctly?
I told you I was new to this. I never listed with the ODP, but I am now. Can't wait till I am listed there.
As for fishing...nothing on the site about that. My business is named after a venomous lizard that lives in AZ, the Gila Monster. It is the only thing that I can think of that got me listed like that.

He just asked a good question. Your profile say's that
you are a full member so I think that we both figured
that you knew the google directory is dmoz.
There are crazy things going on at google right now.
They applied some new filter or something and did a
deep crawl out of the norm.
Whatever directory you get in at in dmoz is the same at
google. But some heavy hitter categories are going
nuts at google right now. Google is also mixing their
main results in directory results right now (outside of
dmoz). I did check your site and the first information
from your site is bait for fishing.
So yes go get listed in dmoz and I hope the editors in your
category are not corrupt as they are in mine.
Wrong. The Google Directory always lags the ODP. A couple days ago I was checking a Google Directory cat, and was seeing a version of it that was older than sometime late in July. Thus, it is quite possible if you go to dmoz.org you'll see something MUCH different than the Google Directory shows.
I did not make that clear in my above post either.
But google does feed off dmoz directory and
I wish they didn't. But if pcguru333 didn't even know
the relationship he need's to know. That's all!
And then he stands a chance to get his site out of the fishing category at google.
So let him try to get listed in dmoz rfgdxm1 ;-)

service that google gives you. You don't pay them.

in dmoz...That's because the editors love the money from
google! They just keep pumping their own sites...

Have you reported this to staff@dmoz.org, or a meta editor, with a complaint with sufficient detail to document such?

How do you know that it isn't that there is a shortage of editors in that area? Again, if you have specific abuse complaints, report them as I mentioned above.
Have reported many times. No shortage at all. The category
editors own companies in this niche and just keep on a
spammin their own sites. In this last week of the google mess I noticed a whole new crop of sites they are listing (and their own). But small ones and inter linked sites that they have always done like:
blalala.com/nccucu/bbfbf/blalala.html
are getting deleted.
It's a complete mess on it's own.
Owe yes, google has their eye's out there big time.
They have said so.
They don't even use sites in dmoz in my niches.
Why don't you help pcguru333 as he's the one asking for help.
I do not give a damn about that directory cause it will

I never thought anyone was being sarcastic. I was actually very grateful for the info. I have been designing web pages since 1996 but mostly Intranet stuff. So the whole Search Engine thing is new to me.
I listed yesterday with DMOZ. I hope this helps clear up my category with Google. I am the original owner of the domain name (yes the one in my profile). I have owned it since March or April this year. I have had a skeletal site up for awhile (which I have since learned isn't a good idea) Google has been spidering my site since its inception but I haven't been listed on Google until 2 days ago. Which is when I started finishing some pages on my site. The pages I updated still didn't have any Meta tags and they do now so I hope that by listing at DMOZ and adding the Metas I will get a better listing. So far Google only has my index.html listed and none of my other pages.
But really, I sense that some here thought I was being sarcastic, on the contrary I was grateful while feeling a bit amaturish (sheepsih grin - looking at the floor)
I have read some of Brett T's postings and so I am making changes to try and get good SERPs, I am still unsure of how I can get linked from anyone else's site that will help my PR as I am a part time small fry in the world of consulting (I still have a day job too). So far I don't even have a PR of 0.
'Patience' I tell myself, and I have plenty, I am just worried that I am doing something wrong and I am going to be listed wrong or something else bad will happen to future SERPs if I don't take corrective action soon.

I may have an answer to why I was listed on a fishing page before. I just noticed when I did a site search Google asks if I meant to search for bluegill.com (for non anglers a Blue Gill is a fish) Maybe Google is trying to interpret what my domain name represents and thinks it is supposed to be a fish. I dunno I guess I will have to wait and see if I get listed again.

I don't rate your chances getting listed. Your site is still under construction and therefore it's not eligible to be included in the directory. You never know, yours might slip through the net though.
Next time you submit a site, you might want to look at the [url=http://www.dmoz.org/guidelines/]DMOZ Guidleines[/quote] beforehand.
I was listed on the ODP the next day. BTW it isn't against the guidelines to list an unfinished site. Here is a snippet from the guidelines:
Is the site complete? - The site should have working links and content rich subpages. Links should not bring up 404 pages or subpages with no content. If a web site is still under construction it is not a good candidate for the Open Directory. Sometimes sites may have broken links, poor design, or other "quality" issues, yet present information that is difficult or impossible to find on the Web. Consider adding these sites to the ODP. Even with some flaws, if the content is rare and unique, the site may be considered very useful.
It states that it is not a good candidate, doesn't say it can't be added. Besides my site will always be adding new content and a majority of the pages are finished and all the links are working.
I am indexed on Google again and the ol googlebot has been by everyday the past week. Still has me listed with the fish mag directory at the top of the page (all the pages listed with mine are not fish mags!) I will be patient for the DMOZ listing to kick in.
