Automated Link Farm and/or Recip Managers helpful or harmful?

How well do link farm or recip generator programs work?

I am new to making websites and everything I have learned I have taught myself. I have noticed, however, as I have been searching for quality sites to link to mine, that many sites with decent PR (5-7) use link manager.

Anyone know if it is worth it, or should I stay away?

Automated programs or links programs will only bring you problems over the long term.

Would it hurt me if I don't use recip manager, but someone who links to me does?

Not at all, the main thing with linksmanager - it is not scaleable and a lot of sites will hound you with useless link requests - make sure you let them know you are only looking for topical sites.

Its not the tool but how you use it, (well thats what I say to my other half :-)

What if I find a site that has a decent PR that will link to me, but it is nothing close to the same topic. Should I reciprocate the link or stay away?
