A Strange Anomaly

This may belong in the Florida Thread but............

I have over the last few months noticed a strange anomaly with a couple of sites I manage.

Seeing the resulting listing created by a simple "in context" graphic link, I have since been interested to find out why such a simple link could produce such a high result in Google.

The results appear similar to some of the findings in the recent Florida Update thread.

Without giving too much away my findings are as follows:

A PR4 site has approx 30 pages with a graphic link at the bottom of each page to a widget-widget.net (optimised for the same widget widget keywords) 4 page site of no special consequence.
No other sites link to this 4 page site.

The graphic links have NO ALT TAG on some pages and the first widget keyword on some of the others.

The "linked to" site has ONE "in context" text link back to the PR4 site.

The search for the specified widget widget keyphrase in Google returns 14.8 million results.

The PR4 site is listed no 10 in the results.
The link from the Google results page is to the index page on the PR4 site that DOES NOT have the alt tag!

The site the PR4 site links to is nowhere to be seen! (not surprising really)

This is not a recent result, it has been around for a few months.

This was also not intentional, as the PR4 site has no reason to be listed for this particular 2 word key phrase.

Anyone else experiencing anything similar?
:)

By the sound of it, I'd say you've found a niche for keyword keyword as a phrase. The rest of the results will be keyword............... keyword as seperated words.

The PR4 site points people ultimately to the 4 page site, but potentially the PR4 site has more information on "keyword keyword" so is google actually wrong?

Seems to me that it nailed it pretty well.

Our sites relate to the tourism business in a South American counntry. One of our relatives has two sites in Florida related to the engraving business. We have links to them on our sites as a courtesy and they link back to us.

For certain searches on our area - for instance "map of area" - the page from the engraving company site with the link shows up. This has been going on for a long time. It surpises me that Google and other SE's can't identify a text link to an unrelated page as not being relevant to a search.

Hi trillianjedi

I think I follow your reasoning here.

The PR4 site in question has a very large amount of images which all have alt tags, together with a javascript on every page, each containing one of the keywords.

From your observation, I now presume these are all helping the ranking for the PR4 Site for the 2 word keyphrase even though the site is not actually about the keyword keyword?

Am I on the right track?

If so do you think I should address the situation to remove any chance of the pages being picked up for possible incorrect practices.

Regards & thanks

Am I on the right track?

Actually I think we're slightly at cross purposes, but what you've posted helps further.

There is no doubt that the use of the two keywords on the PR4 site will help it for a search on "keyword keyword", but this isn't what I was orignally thinking.

Out of pure curiousity, and related to another thread, what does a "keyword-keyword" search (with the hyphen, no space) produce?

Certainly I would wait for Florida to finish cooking before doing anything. Give it until next weekend and see if anything changes.

Someone did mention this same situation - I think it was in the Florida update thread, but I'm not certain. As I recall, they didn't say what type of link (text vs. graphic) they were using.
If I can find the thread with that post, I'll add it here.
