Our company makes widgets and most of our clients are from a certain university. This university has a student newspaper website which has a PR of 7 and receives approx. 1000 impressions a day. They have offered me a text link on thier homepage for a fee. I would be the only advert.
How much do you think this is worth, especially from he point of view of our rank in the Google listings.
Thanks
Alex

Well, PR doesn't equal visits, and even if it did, can you convert a visit to *your* site into a sale?
I'd think the correct starting point isn't "Will I get PR from that site and how much should I pay for it", but rather "Will that site get me more traffic, and will that traffic be worth anything"
I'll leave others to tell you their own interpretation of what PR the link might be, but you can't put a price on it (unless you merely want the status value of getting more PR), unless you have a clear picture of what to do with the traffic when it arrives <smile>

But, let's not beat around the bush: the PR 7 link will transfer PR (it may not be much - who knows - but it will). If so then his listing may improve. And if his listing improves, he's likely to get more hits. And if hits mean sales - more sales!
What is certain, is that no hits means no sales!
How many outbound links on this page to other pages (including on that site?) If 150, a link on some teenager's home page that has a PR5 may be more valuable for Google.
>They have 117 inbound links according to ATW and they are good inbounds including UK university domains (.ac.uk)
Totally irrelevant for Google. Only way this is relevant is if the inbound links happen to be from sites heavily used by people who would likely buy your product.
There is a lot of value in high PR.
There is also a lot of value in using it properly - having your site optimised for many different search terms.
The competitor has over 2000 widgets v my 50. I get just a smidgon less traffic than he does per month - my site SEO to the max, his not.
[added]I'd pay more than you have had quoted. However, a link from a PR7 is not worth as much if all your competitors have higher. Its all relative.[addded]
Who much is a link from a PR7 site worth?
$0.00 in my book. Besides, just how do you know they are *really* PR 7 and how do you know they will stay PR 7? Is the page they will link to you PR 7? How many other links will be on the page? Is the page relavent to your site?
Checking your site in your profile, Google shows no back-links. Spend a week searching for on topic sites and get some links (exchange) from them with good keyword/phrase anchor text. Don't even look at PR (not that anyone can tell anyway) just gets lots of good links into your site, wait a month to 3 and you will be FAR better off than paying for a link from a page that *only google* knows the true PR of.

Go into Google directory and look up sites.. they are ordered by highest page rank to lowest.
You will get VERY few hits direct from the directory. It's in the Google search results that you need to be ranked high. PR is only one of MANY factors that will determine where you appear in SERPS
I am personally not a big fan of buying PR, but after looking at their site, it seems like there are people who do so, and just one link ends up getting PR7 or something.
NS
but after looking at their site, it seems like there are people who do so
There are also people who buy snake oil, x-ray glasses and many other Placebo type products and services. :o)
There are also many people who pay for things that can be had for free. Like they say, there's a sucker born every minute :o)
