poppy symbol isn't used as widely in the U.S. so most people wouldn't understand it
It used to be. Through the '60s vet organizations and others sold paper poppies on the street for 5 or 10 cents apiece. It's almost impossible to find them anymore, along with parades and most other remembrances.

It must be that they consider google.com a worldwide property. Still, I could use a poppy today.

The problem is as you say this isn't actively observed today. In the mind of the average American WWI is ancient history. However, Memorial Day is widely observed.
