Purely based on links.

Both internal (from your own pages - if those pages have PageRank themselves) and external (from other pages linking to you - if those pages have PageRank to pass on).

That's completely correct, but there's a side effect...
If you have a large site, and you arrange for PR to be moved about by linking certain pages to other pages, you can definitely increase, for example, the PR of the HomePage, or the Site Map, for example.

In that respect, having a lot of pages on your site does enable you to favour certain pages at the expense of others, and the more pages that you have, the more you can siphon off PR from some pages and concentrate it on others.
