Google Related Search

How do they decide whether a site is related?

Hi,

I have several webpages which I have linked from the index-sites. It is not a cross - linking. (i.e. not every site links to every site)
When I search in Google for related:www.mysite.com it shows me some of my own sites I have reciprocal linked to although the sites have absolutely different topics and do not have any relation except the links.
So how do they decide that these sites are related? Not every site is related to another only because it is linking to the other site.

Usually it is sites being linked from the same page(s).

then it would be the same as the link:www.mysite.com query?
Or did I get that wrong?

No. If Page A links to Page P, Page Q and Page R and you start a search for related pages of Page P, you will see a SERP with the home page of Page Q's site and the home page of the Page R's site if they are not on the same site as Page P. If you start a search for links to Page P, you will see a SERP with page A (no matter if Page A and Page P are part of the same site or not).
