PR 8 website without incoming links

no backlinks but PR 8! HOW?

Hello,
I have found a website with a pagerank 8! I looked at the beackward links and I wondered.......this website receives only links from his own pages!
How can this work?

I only can see links from his site to other sites with pr8 and 9!

But I still don't understand the pr8!

Did you check backlinks on Alltheweb, Altavista, etc. to see if Google's link: was accurate?

I've been looking a similar situation as this myself. A PR7 site wants to trade links with me, but they have 0 incoming Google links other than their own site and only 13 incoming links according to ATW, none of which is higher than a PR5. I have no idea how they have a PR7 and am wary of trading links with them because of it. No doubt I'll do it regardless though :)

Check internal pages. They may have some high PR links to other than the home page.

On all the web do a search with this syntax:

link.all:www.thatdomain.com -site:www.thatdomain.com

It should return all external links to any page on that site that ATW is aware of. You need a bunch of links to get to a PR8 and a big bunch of PR1s, 2s & 3s will do it.

It's an internal page that has the PR7. The index page is grey barred along with several other root level pages. Then there's a few links from the index page are PR6's and two pages that are two levels deep that are PR7's. I haven't quite figured it out yet, but I'll probably link swap with them anyway :)

I've seen this with a family of sites. I don't quite get it, but they started out PR7 before they showed their backlinks. That may just be the order Google does it these days: show PR before showing backlinks for that PR. Likely next month you'll see the reason for the site's current high PR.

(Does this site have a strange .tld you've never seen before?)

I've stumbled across a few high PR sites (not 8s however) with only internal links, usually on something obscure like the religion behind aztec sacrifices or some such. The common denominator seems to be that the sites have been around a few years, and they're informative in a field where there's not a lot of quality information. Don't know if that describes your PR 8 site or not.

If what you guys are saying is true, then this could be big. The comments made suggest that google is dividing the web up as far as page rank is concerned. Rather than spreading page rank to all other web sites, a site can only pass page rank to a site that is in a similar subject area to its own. This is onsistent with what others have been saying elsewhere.

However, it's hard to study this openly with the webmasterworld policy on not allowing posting of keywords or sites.

Could someone please sticky me examples of sites where this is happening?

The myth of theming in google's calculations remains at large. Sit back for about 10 minutes, and think of how any program would be able to correctly theme pages according to subjects without letting thousands of mistakes slip through. Google is great, but the PhD's there would have an enormous task ahead of them to implement themed results/calculations.

Well, mistakes aren't a problem if your search results are more appropriate as a whole.

Google does have the technology to theme web sites. When a site has adsense ads on their page, Google decides what ads to place using themeing. Why can't they use an element of that as part of their 100 features in their algo.

But Adsense Ads often completely miss the theme of a page. E.g. if there is a band called Ferrari and you have a page about them then you get adverts for Ferrari cars. Theming should figure out that your site/page is about music and relates to a musical Ferrari. Google would then present the searcher using the keyword Ferrari with the options of 'car' or 'music' search returns

(PS: as far as I know there isn't a band called Ferrari and this example is just hypothetical)

Why should that maake a difference?

I suspect if you were to search for ferrari without any kind of themeing, then ferrari (the car, not the band) would still dominate the search results.

The point is that Adsense is not very good at theming - it would show car adverts. If Adsense algos are used by Google for theming, my page about the band Ferrari woldn't show because it isn't about cars.
