Why does Google attract so many analogies?

Some people have seen the Thomas Friedman story quoting someone saying that Google + a wirelesss connection was a bit like God or something similar. Here's the other angle, comparing God to Google:

Does anyone else wonder at the amount of analogies that Google attracts? It's a bit strange. I think of us as company that organizes information and helps people find that info. But it's a bit weird to see companies say that they are the "Google of X." I've seen the "Google of audio and video"; one company wanted to be the "Google of eBay," and I've even seen a company that claimed the mantle of the "Google of Homeland Security." Anybody else seen things like this? What's the weirdest one you've run across?

>I think of us as company that organizes information and helps people find that info.

I think you underestimate how important that information may be to the person seeking it

I agree in the asumption that, information to one person can he holly.

I do not see Google like some holly thing.

Google IS:
Google is a company which stores information, and then in a clever way sorts the information, and makes it available to the public (Well most of it)

Google is not fantastic, what Google is good at doing it collecting information better than the other search engines (Even though Alltheweb, is somewhat close)
Because the information that Google collects is in most cases available to whoever else wants to collect it too, how to find that information is another thing.

Google's most precious part is how it ranks that information, there is nothing "unique" in it, but it's very good, and no other company have exactly the same algorithm.

What one man creates, another one can destroy.
What one man creates, another one can do better.

That's life, i have respect for the People at Google, they've done a very good job so far in handling the massive information they have, and ranked it in a way which helps "Normal" people to find that information they were looking for.

But Google is not unique, and one day someone else will probably handle the information better, and make it even easier for people to find the information they were looking for.

Companies come and go, and life continues, so does evolution.
That's all for today kids.

A recent one on how it's perceived by searchers and SEOs - G is now a bit like the school orchestra, while the parental audience enjoy the performance, the music teachers wince at all the bum notes.

GG,

I wouldnt get hung up on the God to google comparison. The point was the desire for instant gratification and the right answer (defined as the one we want) from God just as we expect and now demand from Google.

IMO it also speaks to the standard which we now have for google. Certainly this is evident after any change in the serps as webmasters, amidst the weeping and nashing of teeth, cry aloud, "Why does google allow bad things to happen to good searches?" or "If google was a just SE, then why are spammers allowed to prosper while honest, google-fearing webmasters languish on page 203?".

I bet the biggest wailing is usually, "Google, why doth thou not answer my prayers or spam reports" and "Google, what is the meaning of life, or at least the importance of PR vs anchor text". And lets not forget the foxhole prayers of "Oh Google, if you lift the penalty I promise to never be a bad SEO again".

I dunno, GG. It seems like many have lifted Google up pretty high. The question I have for you all at the googleplex is do you view Yahoo/INK and MSN as competing dieties or false gods and prophets?

"Thanks google for giving birth to such a community..."

wanna_learn, I think all of the credit for the community here goes to Brett and the other moderators. WebmasterWorld was definitely around before Google really started to become popular. :)

But literally Google is Bread Butter for lot many internet based Co.s! and yeah might be another serach engine in future would inherit this so called "Godness".

How about starting anther thread on what Google isn't like?

Google is not like God - It can't offer the promise of salvation.

Google is not like a woman - It can't do a lot of the things she could ;)

Google is not like a restaurant - it can't cook you bacon and eggs.

Well, perhaps one positive analogy - Google is like a toilet. When you sit there and use it, it has to process a lot of crap.
