difference between "link to" & "contain the term"

what is the difference between "link to" & "contain the term" when showing information on a url.

i know "link to" is the backlinks to the url. but why do some links show in "contain the term" and not in "link to" when they are?

Link to are pages that have an active ahref tag. Contain the term means they just contain the term, the url doesn't need to be linked.

The main difference is that there are people who will mention a URL without linking - those show up in contain the term.

I use "contain the term" to show me what pages Google has recognized that are not showing in my backlinks.
