Google and its partners up to 74+ % in France (of which Yahoo 12%)
according to estat.com september 2003

Count is probably too low. Google is in most western european countries rather at 80%, approaching the 90% fast.
Add their wildfire spreading in the search related advertizing biz, extrapolate with the coming tidal wave of Adsense, and you realize this company is going to own the web in Europe.

No spidering costs (as the robot has already crawled billions of documents).

Lower technology costs (what's another few thousand servers to G?)

Lower development/staff costs (they have some pretty good engineers already)

Lower customer acquisition costs (google.* benefits from the existing branding of google.com)

There's a need for very local, human edited search engines and directories, but for whole countries it's getting hard to compete with Google.
