It boosted my ego a lot this morning seeing it go up, even if it's not meaning a lot :)
But I realized one thing: on a rather new site where all pages a treated equally when it comes to links, one sub-page stands out. It's a page linking to a very high PR site that is very much on topic.
Maybe that's a new idea from G to keep people from hoarding their linking power and transforming the "web" into a bunch of unlinked islands?
TrillianJedi, do you think it is necessary to link to a high PR site? My experience says otherwise. Have you tested this?
Necessary? No.
Beneficial? Yes.
Yes I have tested it - impossible on the web to create perfect test conditions, but as far as it's possible to tell, it's a good thing to do.
If you think about it from a search engine point of view, it's also a very obvious thing to do (quality sites link to authoritative sites).
In the future it will be _very_ important to link to Authorative Sites.
Why? What's happening in the future?

The only problem I see is with some of them I already have a link exchange (from a dedicated links page).
Maybe I should request that they drop my link from their links page. LOL.
LMAO
Yes, this could be fun :) Cabbie, if this works I owe you some drinks at the next pubcon.
I have a site in positions 6-9. So by linking to ALL competitors above me I will be #1?
no, I think some of you are looking at this as some magical secret uncovered in the algo. It will not make you better than all those sites, but it will help in some small way. It will not be more important than any other item like H1 or META or TITLE or whatever.
The reason you might pass the ONE site above you is that your sites are probably so similar anyway since they rank together, that the link might put you over the top. The #1 site is already a lot more relevant than the #9 site, so you won't be able to gain that much.

Today I noticed I was back to a PR of 5 and my back links are now at 37.
I should also note that during the month i fell in PR I went up in serps for 3 new keyword phrases I was trying to target. The jump was pretty significat also. I jumped from #55 to #13 in a search term that has over 3 Million result pages. Another search term whic has a little over 8 million results I went from #11 to number #8.
Along with adding some backlinks I also improved my anchor text and possibly increased the density of the anchor text in my index page.

However if you have done everything you know in terms if optimizing a page - why not try to link to good ranking, high PR or some DMOZ sites and see what happens. And of course it should be "on theme" with your page (linking to google will not help you :-).
At least I don't feel alone, Brett is suggesting it (G).
So if you are in the top 10 and making money do a deal with all the others in the top 10 ,exchange your links and guarantee your income.
This sounds like a very decent cash-cow strategy :)
