How google works?
When I got incoming links to http:/mydomain.com/sth/ will it raise PR of http:/mydomain.com/sth/, http:/mydomain.com or both? or maybe to raise main page PR I should link from http:/mydomain.com/sth/ to main site?
And how about name of files... what if in /sth/ directory there is no 'index.htm' file - just 'main.htm' - will it be indexed (all incoming links are pointing directly to it)?

When considering PageRank, you need to think in terms of individual pages, not in terms of sites.

A single page passes x amount of PR to each page that it links to, regardless of whether that page is on the same domain or on another domain.

There is a paper on the web by the founders of Google, called something "the anatomy of a search engine". It's a must read for SEOs.
