Guys,

I now this topic has probably been posted about many many times before.

I run a network of sites that are all being linked to by a site that was once a PR 6, and has recently been dropped to a PR1. The site is being linked to by at least 2 PR8 sites, and numerous PR5-6 sites, and does have lots of affiliate links and backward links to it, but probably due to text spamming on the site, has been all but dropped by google.

Google is showing no backward links for this site, but strangly the site is showing a PR value of 1. Why would this be if the site is basically banned from google?

Will the links from the site harm any of the PR values for any of my sites, and is it not a good idea to link to this site?

I am in a little bit of a squeeze with this site, as the site belongs to one of my major clients, and I don't want to upset said client in the process of looking after my own sites.

Any help or tips will be a great help

Should not affect you as anyone could link to you to cause problems if that were the case....unless you reciprocate...then it is a problem

No problem for somebody linking to you.

The links from your site to the banned site are risky, but I am not sure that it is banned at all.

I read here at several instances that there is no harm to get links from banned sites, as long as you do not link to them.

Such a Google policy would be wise: You have control over the links that you have on your site, not over the links on the sites of others. My bet is that this policy is in use.

instand1,

Thanks for that information, and to the rest of you guys.

Is there anyway I can find out if this site is actually banned by google at all?

I can sticky you the URL if needed

cheers

If the site is banned, it's home page shouldn't show in the SERPS.

If It's PR1, then maybe they just lost their only good backlinks. A good link from a PR8 will easily make the site a PR6. If they lost that link they would plummet as quickly.

There is no such thing as sit PR, it is only page PR. What is the PR of the linking pages?

I would bet that it was just a hiccup on the part of google. It will probably pop back up in a month or so. As long as it is in the index, there is nothing to worry about. Not to mention ...

linking to one banned site will not cause you to be smitten by the mighty rod of GoogleGuy. One link to a bad neighborhood does not make you a part of that neighborhood. There is no domino effect where just one link to a bad neighborhood can do you in, and then cause every page that links to you to get penalized too. If that was the case, the entire web would be banned within a month.

Over the last year, I have linked to several banned or penalized sites without once having a problem. I suspect that the reason is that there are thousands of links off my site, and the penalized sites are a very small percentage of my outbounds. Think about how many penalized sites DMOZ links to, they would be banned if links to penalized sites caused you to be penalized too.
