How does Google calculate PR?

I'm new to SEO, but what I can tell so far that Google's PR matters a lot when it comes to one word searches or when you are tied for top spots with other sites. Is that true?

And most importantly, how does Google calculate a PR for a given page?

My understanding is that PR is still calculated pretty much the same way. The search algorithm I think you are referring to is frequently changing. PR is just one of >100 factors that go into the seach algorithm and are given different weightings from time to time.

The weighting can be ad hoc.

Google's infrastructure is to some extent built around the demands of the link collection process. Recent papers include references to the large number of graph cycles needed to calculate PageRank.
