I tried some searches in google and noticed that some sites make a doorway page for every possible keyword that has something to do with their site. so if the keyword is X, they make a page called X.html and contain that keyword in the title and headers of that page. And than they just link that page to their site on other domain.. Do search engines ban you for that? Isn't that fake promotion or something?

With that particular tool, the pages generated had no content at all and were named something like avkeyword1.html, ggkeyword1.html, yhkeyword1.html (each page aiming at a different SE and a different keyword), with a hallway page named 1987730.html, so it was not difficult for GG to identify them and apply penalties.
Maybe it is more difficult to identify doorway pages if they are manually generated, have a meaningful name and contain at least a tiny bit of info (e.g., a picture of the product and a link to the main page); in this case, possibly, GG wouldn´t even consider the page to deserve a penalty.
Stay away from automatic doorway generators (if they still exist).
This has worked very well for me as a page within my site that has real valid information on the keyword subject matter. Google loves it since it is a source of good content, and people will be directed to your site.
html file is named keywords, h1 keywords, page title keywords, etc..
Just my two cents.

You might as well develop a little page with real concent without breaking a sweat. Or: while you're on it, why not go a little further...This is how I stopped doing doorway pages and whenever I sit down now I don't even think about doorway anymore, it's always something worth the effort.
I believe this is what the SE's figured and got rid of any algo headache over this issue.
On a side note: doorways may make sense for huge, fragmented sites to put another level or two in between logical nav structure. But: these will be a vast minority and again then: not worth the bother for the SE's if the rest of the site features rich content.

Link these pages well with-in your site and they are an open invitation to explore the site further, or to respond to the specific call to action (Buy Now!) that the page is targeting.
I was thinking of having an webpage which is an exact copy of my homepage with the exception of the content been aimed more at the US market, and maybe changing a few of the graphics, but the basic navigation and design of the site is the same.
Does this break any Google TOS? Would it look like a backdoor page?
Just wondered. Seems the most sensible thing to do.
I my case, I create pages that are geared towards the different themes of my products. For example I will have a page for Theme1 that will deal only with that theme. It will say a bit about that theme, what kinds of products we make that relate to it, and a group of links from there to the catagory pages for Theme1 Widgets, Theme1 Dodads, Theme1 Whatchamacallits, etc that list the individual products.
I try to optimize these pages for Google, but also use them for landing pads for my more general Adwords and Overture keywords instead of my sites main home page since they are more relevent to most of the semi-general keywords such as "Theme1 Stuff"
