The http search in Google

When you type http:// into the Google search box, the results which are returned always fascinate me. It's interesting to just keep looking down the list at what seem to be the world's most important/popular sites.

If this list was to have a title what would it be?
'The World's most important sites as seen by Google'?

Never thought of doing that. It looks like it's all PR - and different results by doing allinurl:http://

the "http://" remains though in the search combobox. if i restart MSIE and select it from there, it works.

Again with the "http"?

There is a thread here from 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and now 2003.

All you need is "http". It is as close to the Google Top 1000 list sorted by pr as you will get.

aah, but Brett you must remember that on a forum like this you do get new members from time to time and there are people who haven't come across certain subjects like this. So there is never any harm in bringing these once covered subjects to a new audience. I tried to do a search here but failed to find anything about the http search. Maybe I'm not as good with the search function as you are.

Use Google with site:webmasterworld.com ;)

or as a matter of fact, any SE which provides this functionality

Well, I just started a thread about this a week or two ago, and it doesn't look like Brett noticed it, as it doesn't appear in his list.

None of the respondents to that thread (which included Googleguy and several other senior members of the board) seem to have been aware of the other threads either, as they didn't refer me to them.

I'm interested now to find out about it, as it proves that the person I spoke to hadn't actually conducted the search in the past-- he was sure it used to work, but had probably typed in something else.
This certainly answers my question, to an extent.

But, I would say, you can't really complain that a thread gets repeated, because there are so many threads on here, it's very difficult to find old ones.

Especially since my thread was called Bizarre Result In Google or something like that. (Oh, would you look at that? I can't find it.)
<edit>I've just spent several minutes searching for my thread and I can't find it. I don't remember its precise title and I don't know the date. I could go look in my threads, but that's only because I know I posted in it. If I didn't know that about the thread, I would not be able to find it. If I didn't know the thread existed, I would already have concluded by now that nobody before me had noticed it and that it hadn't been discussed.</edit>

Most important for what? Searching "http" is quite redundant.

Popular (PR)? May be. Importance? No!

dragonlady, i didn't point you to the threads that Brett mentioned but it makes me sad that you didn't notice or comment my answer to your question (porsche example). ;)

>you didn't notice or comment

I didn't? Oh dear. I went away for a couple days and lost the thread. I'll go find it...

<edit>http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/16707.htm
"I can't find what I'm looking for in Google / Absolutely bizarre results for a search"
didn't show up in a search for "http", for "bizarre", for "http search", and when I finally broke down and tried those plus Google, I got a billion results about Google (of course) and that's it.
So I don't know what else I should've searched for to find it. I sure couldn't.

Reading it, I can't find any post by you, Yidaki... In that thread?

Doing this http search, Google Groups comes in at #29.

Is there any evidence that Google Groups (in other words, alt.newsgroups) are spidered these days? (At least in terms of effecting SERPS...)

I did a quick look and it appears that the lower level groups pages all show 0 PR. I did a couple of "unique" searches for stuff located in messages on the regular google search and didn't get any results from Google groups or any other page listing the messages, so I think the short answer is, "No."

i beleive it's the anchor link bringing these sites at top ..

many homepages and small sites just link yahoo and google directly as 'http://www.google.com' 'http://www.yahoo.com'

incase of http:// google might be having more anchor links compared to yahoo and vice versa incase of www

who would go on a hunt to find those tho'
