Is Inbound Link Info Correct?

I've just carried out a search for inbound links and it doesn't look right - (I used this method link:www.mysite.com and clicked on 'show ommitted results').

There's loads and loads more inbound links recorded on AV and AllTheWeb, than on Google. I'm talking like 100,000 on AV and then only 100 on Google.

Now this info maybe correct, but I just want to check if anyone else has motcied such a big discrepency?

If this info is correct, then it seems strange that so many pages with inbound links would NOT be crawled by Google.

Google backlinks are not accurate they are a random selection of your links and I believe that google counts alot more than it shows. The backlinks that are shown are not PR dependent. Alltheweb has a more accurate count but it is slower to update.

I checked a sample of the links that it listed and most were PR4 or above - there are a couple of PR3's.

I suggest that you are both correct. It shows a random number of links that is in direct proportion to your total number of inbound links.

(If it was purely random then why do some competitor sites have less links showing? Everyone would have a random selection of exactly 100 links for example) Or something like that anyway.

It is not a random selection of links. Only PR 4 or above. But the toolbar takes longer to update, so not an accurate representation of the current PR of a page.

Though google has always showed less links than it says you have. This has got a lot better recently.

I have worked very hard at building links. When I do a search at Google for www.myclient.com, I get over 1,200 indexed results. However when I do a search for backlinks in Google using "link:http://www.myclient.com", I get zero backlinks!

I know 300+ links of the 1,200 should have been counted as backlinks. In fact, these same links are counted as backlinks for my competitors. Any suggestions or information would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

My experience is similar. AlltheWeb is reporting really huge numbers of links.
