I have a Web site that is doing well with Google. One of my pages ranks number 3 for a highlly competitive search term. I have noticed, however, that for the two competitor sites above me Google displays additional and different information which I suspect comes from the Yahoo directory (I do not have Yahoo paid placement service). The number one and two listings contain regular description statements that looks like they came from the site's Web pages(either Meta or first paragraph). However, below these description statements, there are additional description headings followed by description statements that look like they came from Yahoo. Below these descriptions are category headings followed by category listings which look like they came from Yahoo. My pages do not contain these additional description and category statments.

My question. Is the reason my competitor sites are listed above my site due to their being listed in the Yahoo directory? My page listings do not contain these additional description and category statements.

Are you sure that these descriptions are from Yahoo and not from the ODP/Google directory?

I'm not sure these description and category statements are from Yahoo, but I do know they are on my competitor sites and not on mine, and I do know I am in the Google and DMOZ directories and don't have the same type description and category information on my site.

I checked all my sites that are listed at the yahoo directory and none of them displays a yahoo description or even a yahoo category at the google search results. What they display is the dmoz/google directory information and the link to the google directory category. That's normal.

If you don't see the dmoz/google directory information displayed under your own listing it might be possible that your entry at the dmoz is not yet synchronized with google's version of the directory - it's possible that google simply didn't crawl the dmoz data and didn't rebuild the google directory yet since your inclusion.

Since how long are you listed at the dmoz?

And are you sure that the url of your page that is listed at dmoz is exactly the same like the one you see at google's search results? Look for small differences like the trailing slash ... (just investigating)

Jim, after reading your sticky i see that:

- your dmoz/google directory listing is example.com
- while google has indexed the url www.example.com

Notice the difference - "www".

You can find a lot of info about this phenomenon here at webmasterworld (www vs. no www [google.com]). In short: Google only lists one version. Other way it would be a duplicate listing. Simplest thing is to either redirect (301 permanent) from the www to the non-www url or request a change at the dmoz (this might take a while).

All in all there's no Yahoo directory data displayed with the result listings at google!
