For page titles I've always done my best to make them be a concise representation of what that page is. When you bookmark a page many browsers default to whatever the page title is. Consequently I've always made my page titles be something that I would like to see in my bookmarks.
[Hang in there, I'm building to a point.] For the main page of a web site this has typically meant that I put the company name. Something like "Fraggle Recreations". [ The whole "widget" thing is way over done in these forums. It's boring! Instead I'm using Fraggles. Remember Fraggles? Down at Fraggle rock? Whatever. ]
Anyway, my fake company specializes in creating Fraggle statues. Most people seem to search for "Fraggle statues". [ This is what we call a "niche market". ] All my fake competitors are kicking my butt on Google. Furthermore, in most cases I have a better PageRank than they do.
As I compare our web sites one thing I see they are all doing in common is making their page title "Fraggle Statues", instead of their company name.
Yes, I can do this easily enough. But this is crap! It makes it so the top 10 results in Google all look the same because everyone is using the same page title. I think Google is giving too much power to the page title. Consequently all the top results end up being a jumble of search key phrases rather than a true description of the web site.
Anyway, I really don't have a question. I'm mainly just mad that I'm going to have to change my page title to something generic just so I can rank decently with Google. I also wanted to talk about Fraggles.
GoogleGuy, if you care to have a real example of this, I can provide it.
