greatwidgets.com has been listed on the second page for approx 6 months for widgets PR6. I believe that if I switched to great-widgets.com I would have a better chance of making it to page 1. What is the best way to transition to a new domain name? Is this to much of a risk?

You might want to take the hyphenated version just to protect it so nobody else gets it, but if you're already PR6 and on the second page it's an easy jump to the first page without making any domain name change at all. Once you're already ranking like that and have that kind of PR it can be done by making some modifications within the site itself.

Why not grab greatwidgets.org instead and make it a purely informational site (with a link to greatwidgets.com in the navigation bar) that will get listed for free in directories. I do *not* believe greatwidgets.tld Vs great-widgets.tld makes *any* difference whatsoever with Google. If anything, non-hyphenated domains seem to tend to be less Spammy. If I am right, I am sure G has noticed this too. Maybe changing to a "-" will work against you ;-)
