Penalty for using Marketleap?

Hi there,

I recently launched my site a couple of months ago, and have been unwittingly using Marketleap's link popularity check and keyword verification check pretty frequently (almost daily, i'm ashamed to admit!). i recently read that using programs like webposition gold (whose functions are similar, i've heard) can result in a penalty from google. does the same apply from using marketleap's tools as frequently as i have? my site has been / still is in the google directory for the past 2.5 months, but still has no PR (a white bar). Is it possible i have a penalty? other than stop using marketleap, is there anything i can do (e.g., write to google?) to remove the penalty? Thanks!

It is no secret that Google will ban the ip and domain of a link check util when they find them. Why MarketLeaps is allowed to run is beyond me - and Google knows all about it.

However, I have never been able to verify any claims that using a link pop checker will hurt your rankings just by using it. (the host of the link checker is another matter)

It could be too easy to hurt competitors in that way.

Marketleap's checker looks to me that you have to hand enter the URLs. As such, this isn't automated querying, which is what Google bans.

Do you really update your site that frequently to make it worth while doing a keyword check? And as for Link Popularity - that'll only really change every Dance (ok, they'll be a bit of everflux, but nothing really significant). If I were you, I'll cut down the querying to weekly or fortnightly (I personally aim for a "not more frequent than a fortnight" basis).

When you use Marketleap's link popularity checker, the request is coming from Marketleap's IP address, not your local machine's. This is the main difference between a utility like Web Position Gold and Marketleap's link popularity checker. Web Position Gold can be run from any desktop and can be easily mis-used and end up getting a site penalized. To my knowledge, the Marketleap tools have never caused a site to be penalized. However, like another suggested, using these tools everyday, or even every week for one site, is a waste of your time. The big variations are only after the Google Dance. Checking your link popularity every two weeks would be considered very frequent....Once a month is sufficient.

Just checked the FAQ's for the MarketLeap's Link Pop tool. It says:

"This tool SHOULD NOT be used to:
Excessively track link popularity values. Measuring your link popularity values once per month is more than enough. Checking daily or weekly is not a good use of your time... Suspicious activity may be reported to the search engines at Marketleap’s discretion."

Does that mean if I run ie. link:www.domain.com daily or hourly from my PC the site www.domain.com will be punished? If so it does not make any sense to me

Cheers

sounds like a boilerplate disclaimer to me. No one reads that far down the page. as stated above, your competition could run your url thru it 1000 times if it could truly hurt you. I'd imagine that since they're allowed to run, they have some sort of licensing agreement, as they're no secret. perhaps it costs them money every time a query is run, so they put that disclaimer to cut down on the people that use it indiscriminantly, in an effort to cut costs.

Marketleap's link popularity tool will only allow any one user to run the tool a maximum of 25 times per day, so that you don't get too carried away.
