results that don't match the search

'widget widget' = 'widget's widget'?

Maybe someone can help me explain this.

This isn't my original search, but it helps illustrate what I mean. Search Google for "mark heart" (as a phrase) and look at the serps. The results returned actually display "Mark's Heart". My initial thouight was that it was a mistake in the highlighting, and not with the actual results, but a search for "Mark's Heart" gives different results.

What's going on here?

I've a feeling similar stuff has been discussed before , but a site and google search for google partial matching terms didn't return anything useful.

But "Mark's Heart" does include the search term: Mark AND Heart, especially if you consider ' as a seporator.

Wheras a search for Mark's AND Heart would return only those with Mark's and not both those with Mark and Mark's.

If you look at the highlighting of the serps you'll see what I mean. If I search for a phrase like "red widget" this should surely not return results for "red green widget"? I am assuming that 's' in mark's heart is not a stop word, which it doesn't appear to be, and so as far as I can tell, the results are not for my phrase, but for a different one.

Google has been able to parse apostrophes from words for a few months now, at least. It makes perfect sense, because it implies ownership, and is thus relevent to the query in most cases. Plurals are still seen as different words, for obvious reasons.
