Does linking to external images, specifically third party supplied page counters, dilute PR?

If it's referenced within an IMG tag, I'm sure there is no PR transfer. My gut feeling is that images cannot be passed pagerank via a direct HREF link either, because they don't show up in search results and by definition cannot link to any other URL's.
