What is the difference between link: widgets.com and link:www.widgets.com in the google toolbar.

When I search from the toolbar it rewrites the first query as link:widgets.com so I'm getting the same results. If I search from the search box, I get the following:

link: widgets.com "Searched the web for link: domain.com. Results 1 - 10 of about 75,900"

link:widgets.com "Searched for pages linking to domain.com. Results 1 - 10 of about 462"

Hope this is the difference you're inquiring about. :)

I also noticed:

link: mydomain.com/subdomain/

link: subdomain

gives different results (the count being the same)

while

link:mydomain.com/subdomain/

link:subdomain

gives the same results

Can you please specify the reason as to why this is happening.

For my site,
searching in the toolbar for "link: widgets.com" gets the space after the colon deleted and there are no results. Doing the same thing in the search window preserves the space after the colon and I get the expected number of links.

If your site is less than a PR4 Google may not display any results when checking backlinks. If the backlinks are PR4 or less, these may not show up as well. If there are backlinks pointing to your site, you can check AlltheWeb.com to see them.

This gives you results from searching the web (link: + widgets.com) and not backlinks from a site.

Advanced Google Search Operators [google.com]

link: [google.com]
"The query [link:] will list webpages that have links to the specified webpage. For instance, [link:www.google.com] will list webpages that have links pointing to the Google homepage. Note there can be no space between the "link:" and the web page url."

One more thing to add

link: mydomain

and

links: mydomain

gives differnt results too

Why?

Does it consider link: , links: , and mydomain as words in web search and not find backlinks for mydomain
as in link:mydomain

Please clarify

Yes, link: mydomain.com appears to be treated as two words. In my case I participate in a mailing list known as Link, so it brings up my posts to that list. Without the space it is treated as a Google search constraint.

Yes. Look at the blue bar where the number of results are displayed and it will show you how your query is treated.
