Hi!

I'm very new to this webmaster world and this is my first time joining in... I've read and learned a lot from you guys but still have some question all the time.

My question is that, I just wondering what is the main point to get higher page rank? Is it the links point in and out from the page? Suppose I'm talking about just one page. If so, should I reduce links point out from this page and ask for reciprocal link point in to it?

Please help me clear this out...!

Welcome to the forums Cyclob.

There are many (thousands?) of thread relating to pageRank that you could research.

But to answer your question quickly...

Links OUT from your page do not reduce its pagerank.

Link IN to your page increase its pagerank.

The higher the pagerank of the incoming link, the more it boosts your page's pagerank.

All the best

CromeYellow, IMHO links on your page reduce the PR. That's because there are several iterations in the PR calculation process. But some people on this forum are maybe too anxious about loosing PR.

If so, should I reduce links point out from this page and ask for reciprocal link point in to it?

Cyclob, I think you mean, getting links to your homepage, and link to other sites from another page. Otherwise your reciprocal link is not really reciprocal, isn't it? If high PR on your homepage is very important to you, you should try to put the links on a (links) page with low PR, and get the inbound link to your homepage.

Thanks guys! I'm quite clear about this already.

The reason that I came up with this question is because I lost my PR from 6 to 5 since I added some more internal links on the main page for better navigation. It took me sometime to figure out what's the real cause. I took some duplicate links out last month and BANG! I got my PR back to 6 on last dance. But the interesting thing is I just took a few links out (10+ links)...but why it such a big impact.

but why it such a big impact.

1. It could be a small change also. The toolbar PR is a whole number. Changing from 6.01 to 5.99 is not that big. But you don't know the real value.
2. Your site is not the only one changing in the index of Google. So you might have gained/lost some inbound links. The pages with links to your site also had their PR changed. The pages linking to your page might have had more/less outbound links, so the PR of those page is spread over a different number of pages.
3. Google might have changed the damping factor or other factors that influence the PR in general. The number of pages in Google's index is still growing (even though the number on their page still says "Searching 3,083,324,652 web pages" for the last 5 months). With a growing index you need more inbound links to stay on your current PR.

Cyclob, i have about 50 links on my home page to subpages. This month i added about 3,000 backlinks from my subpages back to my home page (my links all used to be in a dhtml menu and not picked up by google)

Will the PR of my homepage increase if i cut down on the links on my homepage? Will my subpages linking back to my homepage increase my PR? I was always under the impression that the homepage is a collection of incoming PR, so it doesn't really matter what you do to your internal pages you can't change the PR of your homepage. (that would imply your subpages are generating PR)

Cyclob,
The way to get good results is to Spam Spam Spam and hope Google don't catch you which they probably won't as they do encourage it don't you know!
Please see this thread which is ongoing [webmasterworld.com...]

Hi

PR is a big distraction in my opinion, if you have pr5 or more you are well in the game. Higher pr will help with major competitive search phrases, but in reality many times more relevant and useful traffic can be acquired by all the less competitive keyword phrases, which you can pick up with good onsite optimisation.

"Will the PR of my homepage increase if i cut down on the links on my homepage?"
No.
Links out do not reduce your pr, except for a fraction of pr returning from internal pages via the home page link.

"Will my subpages linking back to my homepage increase my PR?"
Probably.
In the past more internal pages generated a small amount of pr which could be fed back to the homepage. PR is on a page basis, so internal pages are technically 'links in', however, the algo must recognise internal links and probably gives them less importance, especially recently.
However, anchor text from internal pages is still important, and that is the area to think about.
