"Toronto's mayoral race has moved into cyberspace, with the most visible contenders waging a Google war."

Interesting that the same tactics discussed here have now permeated society to such an extent that they have or will soon become conventional political strategies. A priori, such a shift makes sense if politics is to be concerned with substantive policies and programmes rather than the minutae of personality and impressions.

absolutely

I've already been involved in an election campaign making good use of the web and the Internet...I'm very disappointed though that political parties don't seem to have yet got to grips with the real power of the web...interactivity

using it as a glorified leaflet drop is rather a waste...what people feel they most need in politics is some form of direct and personal response that makes them feel their voice is being heard...yet how much effort do you see political parties putting into policy or casework bulletin boards and such?...it was the busiest aspect of our campaign...we even adopted two policy ideas developed from the bulletin boards into the manifesto

I think the main political parties around the world have now realised the Internet exists...hopefully some time in the next decade some of them might work out what it actually does

What's kind of strange is that I typed in "Barbara Hall" to see for myself and I'm so conditioned to avoid looking at ads, I thought they'd gotten rid of John Tory's ad. Oops, there it was. I guess no matter what I'm searching for, paid ads are always the last thing I'll look at...and then, only if I haven't found what I'm looking for.
