As someone who has written about Google's ingenuity and brilliance on the one hand, and the dangers of a single controlling search utility for the Web on the other, I'm encouraged by the sudden competition. I was surprised, however, by some sources who more or less dismissed MSN's comments as me-tooism.
You can only cry wolf so many times until it is either time to put-up or shut-up or be dismissed.
But several people with knowledge of the system said it consists of more than 54,000 servers designed by Google engineers from basic components....
THE immense size of the system helps explain why taking on Google will not be easy. "Managing search at our scale is a very serious barrier to entry," Mr. Schmidt said.
I don't necessarily think that is true. I think it is whoever is the hungriest for success. There are also a a number of search engines out there that can challenge Google as far as quality but they don't have the buzz, momentum or marketing savvy to even come close to Google with amount of daily searches.
Then there is MSN's stigma it has as the Goliath and webmasters prefer to think of themselves as the David. They will take a slingshot swing at anything MSN tries to do.
If there is going to be a serious Google challenger, it won't come from MSN. However, in the end, as with all former big name search engines, Google may prove to be their own worst enemy.
Finally... they can bring kudos to the MSN search by saying it is now provided by newsearchengine.com ;)
MS's inability to build a viable search engine is once and for all prima facia proof that Microsoft Windows Operating Systems do not scale to enterprise level environments
Then MS does not have to build on Windows OS. I would be surprised if they do not already run some enterprise apps on OS other than windows.
All said, any challenge to Google is at least a few years away and Google rocks for now:)
It was quite funny.
After seeing that even inside Microsoft, they were using linux technology for servers, why would anybody have a delusion about their ability of their servers to work or not at the enterprise level?
Google, on the other hand, has shown that linux seems to work out very well indeed for search engine technology.
