Why do I have pagerank 7?

I do not have any incoming links so why do I have a pagerank?

I have a small site with 32 handcoded HTML pages, I do not have any incoming links. When I look at the google toolbar
I have a page rank of 7! I have tried to reinstall the toolbar, but the result remains the same. I had a friend install the toolbar and check my pagerank and he could verify my pagerank. My site is only 3 weeks old, and I do not even have a Open Directory listing.

Since this is my first time here I really hope this is not a stupid question. I have tried to search in the forums and on the web for an answer but with no luck.

Whe your site has no pr the toolbar often carries over the pr from the last page you visited. Go to Google's homepage and then to your site. Now bask in the glory of your shiny new pr 10.:)

Was your site created using a free website service, like Yahoo- Geocities? With these, the page rank is initially guessed to be a rank or two lower than the main host site. The real page rank will show up after the next update.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, Sami!

This was discussed here earlier today, see [webmasterworld.com...]

It is very confusing to people new to the toolbar, but that is how it works.

There are no stupid questions, we were all beginners at one time (often not very long ago!) and we remember how confusing things seemed at the time.

Hello everybody,

I do have a real pagerank of 7! I checked again this morning and google has all of my pages in its cache!
I also found the reason for this little enigma; I do have incoming links! I have 1 incoming pagerank 7 link, 1 incoming pagerank 4 link to my index page. I also have 1
incoming page rank 7 link to one of my innerpages.

The to incoming pagerank 7 links are from the same goverment website! The pagerank 4 link is from some personal homepage. I have not requested these links, and only a few people have known about my little project. I will email these people and ask where they heard of my little website.

I have one question, I have belived that it is imposible to get a pagerank higher than one below the pagerank of the backlink with the highest pagerank, so I should have had a pagerank of 6?

I wonder what will happen on the next pagerank update?
When they more the little pice about my site from the frontpage and put it in the archive my PR will probably fall like a stone?

one more thing.
I did check with the google link tool before I posted yesterday. It didn't display the links then, it does now.

I have heard it stated here that a high page 7 backlink can give your page a rank of 7.

Congratulations! Now instead of asking us questions can we ask you, what are your secrets to getting a .gov link? ;)

How to get links from .gov / .edu / .ac.uk / etc.:

The hard way...
1 - Create content they want to link to
2 - Present it in a fashion that does not look much commerical
3 - Get it noticed by the relevant people [eg email signature on interesting email discussion with an expert]

OR (and this is a cunning one for academia)

1 - Invite Prof Xyz to write an article upon Widgets (and the Widget course/research at his institution) to appear on your popular website for Widget Hunters
2 - Be surprised at the uptake
3 - Put up his content, with a photo of the guy, link to his institution, etc.
4 - As if by magic, he will link to your site from his depatmental pages without being asked to show off his worldwide recognised expertness ;-)

The second method is a lot better that the first. But note well, if you want one of these links for a Herbal Viagra site, or a Porn site, or your Offshore Pharmacy, however you try it, it's just never going to happen.

Now THAT'S an excellent idea (number two of course)!
