Is this new, I haven't seen it before. Perhaps it's for testing.

You mean the .org part - or the directory part? Both are several years old.

What is new, is that &!^*#$ on js/bs focus garbage:

<script>
<!--
function sf(){document.f.q.focus();}
// -->
</script>

That is just so Yahoo!

I vote for larry and sergey to return to HTML duty. Who ever has the charge of page code these days has no sense of user respect, net history, and does not appreciate Googles legacy of universal code.

It's strange that google.org redirects to google.com but directory.google.org doesn't.

Apparently I'm missing something as I haven't detected any issues in IE 6, NN 4.8 or NN 7 on WindowsXP. What is hidious?

Nothing, unless you feel that having the cursor transported to the text box is ugly? Looks exactly the same as the original that has been there for ages.

As for the js function, Google has been doing that for a long time if I'm not mistaken.

Hrrrm, I had pondered that, but as it is actually a user-friendly feature I thought perhaps there was a browser-specific issue causing havoc with the JS.

Granted, the code should at least be properly noted as JavaScript within the script tag; but the functionality is a Good Thing.
