The secret identity of GoogleGuy

are webmasters being manipulated?

From the Googlham Gazzette:

"As webmasters around the globe are paralyzed by the anticipation of the new google update, suspicions are arising that Google is using the notorious google-forum to manipulate their (webmasters) moods in yet another behavioural experiment.
Unrevealed sources are claiming in fact that Google Guy is in reality no other then Brett Tabke...., the Batmaster of the Web.........will the truth ever be known?"
But rest assured that the next update will make people forget all about it ...."

If he's something like postmaster@google.com or info@google.com he'll get loads of spam. Including the Topsites one :)

My conspiracy theory is that GoogleGuy isn't a guy at all ;)

> I thought they just spent all day playing roller hockey and not pressing the dam update button!

Oh, silly me! I thought they were aggressively hiring new people so they'd have more help with coding and other important work.

I guess you're right. They're just looking for someone who has an extra finger to push that button while they're busy playing roller hockey. ;)

No, they just need a new goalie.

Google - please hold off on the update for another couple of months. I'm very happy with my results at the moment, so why don't we just cancel this one?

lol :)

I wanted to be GoogleGuy, but since Brett was playing that role he said I had to be AltaVistaGuy. :( bummer...

I applied to be DmozGuy but the form timed out and went to a 404 error.

As much as I'd like to see the update happen already, I'm not really obsessed or crazy with it. But, just being here with people who are is starting to have an effect on me. I was driving today and saw a sign that said "Restaurant and Gas" and even though it doesn't even look close at all, at first glance I could swear it said "Google Update." Oh boy...

:::Lets see if we can get back to some quality discussions here this week yet. When you see "update" on the home page here, you can rest assured there has been an update.

If some one with a credible source *cough* GG *cough*, would simple say 'It has been confirmed that the Update will start with in 24 hours', then it would be much easier for us to do that. Until then it's almost impossible to not go bonkers! :) :) NOW PRESS THE BUTTON!

On a completely unrelated note, I can offer you a complete list of available ODP-related user handles, including newly expired or even recently inactive editors, based on a complete spider of all of dmoz.org. Guaranteed less than 6 hours old!

What I do know about GoogleGuy is;

1) That he must work in Silicone Valley (Pacific Coast Time).
2) He probably starts early, and then finishes about 3:30pm
3) However, he first posts around 5pm, which makes me believe he has just left the famour "Google Bar" in their premises, after 6 large spritzers and some Tapas (no ham of course, in case...)
4) He then posts again about 9pm. Which, allowing for 1 hour to eat dinner (I wonder if there is a GoogleGal who does this for him), and maybe an hour to bond with the kids (or the TV). This means he lives about 45 minutes away from the office.

How am I doing GG?

:-)

Even worse.

A former salesman fascinated with Behavioral Study and Statistics. Stalking takes guts, I just sold stuff!

Actually, I just noticed that he tended to post the same times as I was online.

lol. The majority of his posts come late at night - often from home on the weekends. eg: he does this mostly on his own time (thanks).

I'm not an official Google spokeperson, just an employee that stops by to try to answer questions. Posting here is something I do in my spare time--I've got a regular job that takes all my regular hours. That's why I post more at night and on weekends. :)

If it's okay, I'd like to keep my name private. That way if I ever want to hand the torch off, someone else can pick it up and run with it. But I am getting a kick out of this thread. :)

GoogleGuy you seem to be pretty well informed to be 'just an employee'. If I were your boss, I'd give you a raise for being so dedicated to your job, but then I'd fire you for being so talkative about your work on a public forum :). Unless of course you have Google's blessing for doing this and I guess that would make you a sort of 'spokesman' :).

Google Guy,
Do you get over time alowance when u play with this forum. Does your CEO know about it.
I am feeling that google seems to be under some pressure after yahoo taking INK and MSN also thinking of some new stratagies in this market.
I have a feeling that google guy might talk goddie goddie these days accepting comaplains seriously asking to resubmit banned sites and what not....

I've pointed out Google Guy's presence here to several clients, asked them to read Cluetrain Manifesto and to think about how they could use the web to create a more human voice for their company.

Best thing that could happen to the entire corporate world, IMO. No one ever believes all that slick corporate copy anyway.

joeuz, if you write to Google only mention the part about getting a raise. ;) I made sure it was okay before I started posting--it's a very easy way to explain things without heavyweight press releases or official interviews or whatever. If there's a breaking story, it's nice to be able to give a Google-ish perspective.

The truth is I enjoy helping people out here, but it wouldn't be right to pay me extra for that. There area ton of people at Google who work harder than I do: the group that crawls and indexes the web, the engineers who keep the site up, and way too many folks than I could name. It takes a lot of effort to make Google work as well as it does.

GoogleGuy, I think most of the folks on this forum really appreciate what you and all the good people at Google do. You provide an excellent and useful product for all the world to use and there are millions of people who are thankful for that.

Three cheers for Google!
