How many pages of your site should be indexed?

I just checked using the link:my site tool and only 3 on my pages are indexed for my primary key word. The rest are links from other sites. My competitors have a much higher percentage of pages indexed. Should I submit my sitemap? How can I get more of my pages indexed without pushing it? Thanks.

Try "allinurl: mysite" first. Then the keys to getting more pages in are (1) higher PR - more inbound links and (2) good navigation from your home page to the important pages of your site, which in turn link to the next most important pages.

I just did. Again only two pages, but one was different. I do have good navigation and even a site map. What next should I do?

Get lots of inbound links. The better the quality, the better but get lots of links. Assuming good PR, you should get lots of pages in. Are your navigational links all plain html?

...using the link:my site tool and only 3 on my pages are indexed for my primary key word...

I'm confused.

link:www.mydomain.com will bring you up all the known PR4+ pages that link to your site.. either internal or external, but it doesn't relate to a keyword... just anything with a link to your domain.

Are you including a keyword in the search string?

If not, the PR4+ link rule is probably why it is not showing all your pages.

As Taxpod says, to find out all your Google-known pages, use allinurl:www.mydomain.com

If it is Flash, make it html ... if it is frames, start over ... if it loads slowly, burn it.

In any case, text links, and particularly links in square brackets "[keyword phrase link]" in a text navigation should help. Also consider using anchors properly by using the name attribute, onmouseover, etcetera. Of course, nothing beats good page rank and quality text content.

That is all I can recommend (for free). :-)

If you are using dynamic pages:
- Do you have 3 or more parameters in the url?
- Are you using session-ids ofr guests who have cookies disabled?

Both will lead to google not following those links on your page.

Hmm. Let me clarify my situation.

When I enter "link:www.mysite.com", I get 86 pages. Of those 86 pages, only the first 24 show as initial results. Then I get this message:

"In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 24 already displayed. If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included."

I didn't check this before but after clicking the link in this message I found most of my pages were in fact in Google. What I'm not sure of is why they place so low. Is it because of their page rank? How do I get more of my content pages up into the first search?

I hope this clarifies things a bit. Thanks.
