How are the updates and the crawls related?

Are the update and the crawl related, i.e. if the crawl happens late in the month will the dance happen later also?

The new "deep crawl" usually begins shortly after the update. It's thought that high PageRank sites are the first to be crawled, with lower PR sites being crawled later.

It often happens that, if the deep crawl is later than usual, the subsequent update is later than usual - but not always.
