jeffb711,

It'll be interesting to see if this remains true once the dance is on. I wouldn't put it past them to switch DNS, just to keep us guessing... :)

I've never understood why they made www[X].google.com publicly available anyway.

dmorison they do it because it is one last final "beta test" before they inlesh the new index on the main server. If there are serious issues with the new index I can _guarantee_ we will know about it reading this board, and google will reconsider putting it up.

Most probably because all Google employees have too much fun reading the "For sure, it's started!" posts on WebMasterWorld.

www2 and www3 are sync for a long time now.

The switch from 216.239.57.100 to 216.239.33.100 happened on March 21 at about 00:30 am CET.

Before it was 216.239.51.100 (until March 07, about 02:30 am CET)

:)

www2 and www3 are probably going to stay - as it really doesn't hurt google to keep it - and makes webmasters feel special who know the "secret".

What particular advantage would there be not to? One possible reason is that, as someone already suggested, if anything went totally awry savvy webmasters would spot it, and they could pull it back.
