My new site which has not been officially indexed yet by Google went from being #5 for several weeks in Feb/March to being #40 for a week or so and is now nowhere to be found under one of my keyword phrases. Can anyone explain what is happening? Is this normal for a new site to vanish? Please tell me this is temporary. I'm still in the #40 position on WWW2 and WWW3, but gone from Google proper. Comments? Encouragement?

reneewood,

First, check your robots.txt file and any on-page meta robots tags you may use. Make sure you are not telling the spiders to keep out, either intentionally, or through an error of omission.

I can't figure out exactly what you mean by "not officially indexed by Google." As a result, diagnosing your problem is not possible. If you have had your site on-line for two months with incoming links from other sites that Google knows about, then you have a problem. If either of those are not true, then don't worry about it. It takes a month to get listed by Google's deep-crawler, and if you miss the deadline by one second, then it can take two months. In the meantime, the freshbot comes by and lists you for a while, and then drops you and may re-list you again, just to tease you and drive you crazy.

Here's a Googlebot: Deepbot and Freshbot FAQ and Information [webmasterworld.com] post that might prove useful.

Hi Jim, Thanks for the answer. When I say "not officially indexed" what I mean is that my site has been up for about 6 months, however it has only been in the past 6-8 weeks or so that I started submitting it to search engines and only in the past 6 weeks that I started showing up in Google. My problem is that my entire site is built with Bigstep templates. I'm not computer savvy, but I'm trying to optimize my pages the best that I can with the resources I have. I don't have access to my server logs, but I do have a place that shows pages visited and it indicates there is a robot.txt file that has been visited.

While it seems like years it has probably been since the beginning of Feb. that I started getting links and only in the past 4 weeks that I've gotten most of my links. None of my links show up yet, so I am hoping this update will help and that I got them in time. I have a PR of 5, and I have no idea of how that happened. Is there a chance the update, when it happens will help? thanks, Renee
