On the cgi pages are 9 links to external sites and about as many internal links.
As clearly as I can state it then, the question is, if one uses the meta tag "index, nofollow" on a cgi created page, what happens to the page rank that is passed on to that page by the referring page? I get confused thinking about it. I am concerned because if Google spiders all the first level cgi pages on my site then there will be about 6,000 of them. If the site loses a little accumulated page rank from each one of those pages it seems like it would add up to quite a lot of page rank being distributed externally. If Google is instructed not to follow those outbound links, do they still distribute page rank or is it retained on the site? Or?
If you want to prevent transferring PR to other sites you have to look for another way, i.e. without having dead ends.
If you are concerned about loosing pr ... how many outgoing links do you have per page?
If you have a max of 4 to 5 links per page, stop worrying.
If you have more, you should think about "controlling" them through your robots.txt file. Make them a redirect that is either allowed or disallowed for bots. I use a simple trick for this:
the links that should be followed are formatted:
- [mywidgetsite.com...]
not allowed to crawl:
- [mywidgetsite.com...]
Robots.txt entry is:
User-Agent: *
Disallow: /click/nofollow/

<added Yidaki>edit reason: spelling error - should read widgets ;) </added>
i wonder how you would feel if all the sites that link to yours were able to prevent your site from gaining rank?
Notepad - Good point but not my problem. I link out freely to literally hundreds of worthy sites. What I am concerned about is the thousands of links out to affiliate programs. These big business sites don't need any page rank from me and if I don't distribute what little I have to them then I will have more to give to sites whose content I respect.
