Hi JoJo:
Try Word Tracker. You can pay by the day, I think it's $6.50.

Overture is a great starting point, but it is just that. Use what you learn there and then get a great stat counter to find exactly what terms people are using to find you.

it's Overture only. Wordtracker dosen't do anything for you.
But it dosen't have to suck. You need to learn how to read overture. Don't look at the results absolutely, look for terms in comparison to others, this will determine your opportunity cost of focusing of a keyword. And that is what it's all about.
Using overture I can do the following:
1. Figure out where to put my optimisation resources;
2. Know what is working in which month (i save each month's results) as my products are season sensitive
3. Estimate what my sales will be if I had X set of words in the top 10

Good luck

This has got me thinking. As a consumer (who we will assume knows nothing about Google ) when you want to buy 1 widget. Would you search for Widget ( because that what you want). Or would you search for Widgets? ( Because you want to see a collection of widgets to choose from). I have found that on our terms they tend to search both equally, but I'd like to know what other people think about this.

I would say use both the Overture tool AND WordTracker, between the both of them you'll find your keywords. WordTracker allows you a free trial which is somewhat limited but still useful. BTW, FindWhat.com has a keyword tool too, but you have to be registered to use it.

KatyCee
people tend to sart with a general search term and when they dont find exactly what they want they refine their search. this is why you should take overture numbers with a pinch of salt as you rightly say, mine down to find your best terms.

Would you search for Widget... Or would you search for Widgets?

This defer from product to product. To find the answer that pertains to your product you will need to use WordTracker, as the Overture tool combines plural and singular words.
