Some background: I am a rank amateur, an adminstrative asst. working for a very small consulting firm that has a nice simple website.Our site is rich in content, with many helpful articles related to our field, but we are not ranked on Google. So I am trying to figure out why and learn what we are doing wrong. H1 tags have been mention on Google and here, but I don't know what they are.
So can anyone help me understand what H1 tags are and how to employ them effectively (and properly?) Or direct me to a text or site that explains them?
Thank you so much.
Am surprised you are a "rank amateur adminstrative asst." as you describe yourself here, who does not know about H1 tags. As in your last previous posting you seemed to have quite some SEO knowledge;

But I actually am a rank beginner. Our company's website had dropped dramtically in our rankings about a year ago, lost mostly all web traffic. We employed a SEO firm starting in January of this year to address the problem, and when it wasn't working, I decided to educate myself about how Google works. So I did. But as you can see, my knowledge base needs some expanding. (Understanding H1 tags, etc.) I am not a programmer, never wrote HTML, and need some educatin'. So here I am...
