Pagerank distribution and a pyramid structure

It seems that the weakness of the themed pyramid structure with breadcrumb, is that the deeper you go, the less PR the pages have. All of the PR is on the homepage. This is ok if all of your cats/subcats are keyword phrases with the keyword in it that the homepage is targeting. However, it's hard to come up in the SERPs for those internal pages targeting specific keyword phrases. It presents a paradox, because it is these deeper pages which target specific keyword phrases and contain content. This is especially difficult for a site with thousands of pages of content. I have my pyramid structured with keyword phrases. The homepage represents a couple of large keywords, with the categories and subcategories representing keyword phrases.

What can be done?

byepolar, it seems that your incoming links are mostly to the homepage? In that very typical case you should expect more PageRank there.

If the PR was spread across the site, you might find that all pages were only slightly better than your bottom level now. In the pyramid structure it can be very useful to move pages up the hierrarchy. See "Customising the Pyramid" in Theme Pyramids and Google [webmasterworld.com].

Picking the right phrases to go near the top of the pyramid is an important part of helping Google list a site better.
