Google's New Year Resolution

3 months later

I recall reading GG's mention that Google's New Year Resolution for 2003 is to communicate better with webmasters.

Many here feel that the spam report is useless (even when you mention GG and WebmasterWorld) as well as emailing Google with questions or concerns.

Three full months into the New Year and I wonder how Google is doing. From my limited experience, not well. I emailed GG directly about a spammer, which he confirmed receiving, and the spammer still is there.

What is the opinion/experience of everyone else?

I still have lots of respect for Google. This is not an "anger" based thread, but one of disappointment and growing concern in light of Brett's Entropy Part Two thread which most people missed.

What's everyone else think? And what does GG have to say?

Um, a few quick answers. GrinninGordon, the best list of what we consider spam is our quality guidelines on our webmaster section. Generally we prioritize based on what affects our quality the most. I'd encourage any reports, even if they're outside of your area. Zapatista, it might earn you a coffee mug. However, did I mention that I'm really lazy about mailing goodies? ;)

Shew! Hope that provides a little more information and my personal take. Maybe next year I'll play it safe and just resolve to lose a couple pounds, eh? :)

I've suspected this for a while and now I'm pretty sure, GG, you're Canadian...
I figure that tosses all the autograph theories right there. º¿º

Okay. I still hope my idea helps Google and Webmasters for that is the end reward.

Livin on the web,

Google could maintain these pages online and for security
purposes only allow the IP that the domain is housed on to retrieve the information.

I like the idea in general, but the security model above would not work for anyone who doesn't have their PC at the same IP block as the web site. I am in Oz and my sites are in CA and IL.

Google could offer it as a paid service (do I get a coffee mug for commercialising this idea?) but it's going to make SEOs work harder if everyone found out why their sites ranked low. :)

And what about the lucky 3rd world sites with dial-up access to sites hosted elsewhere in the world?

Zapatista, are you anywhere near the Googleplex? Maybe I could leave a mug at the reception desk?

My problem is that I have nightmares when the update is late ... Could google improve the communication on that?

Why? I'm not sure I have ever read anywhere that there is a set date for Google to update.

Hi MetropolisRobot,

It was only a joke, I didn't mean to have a complete listing of the next updates, not that I wouldn't mind having google emailing me when they are about to press the red button ;)
My girlfriend would also be most greatful ... man! can I bore her sometimes with my Googleonia :)

GG, Nah, I am in a Palace bunker underneath Baghdad right now so I won't be in that area for some time.

I appreciate the thought but do hope I have contributed something. In a couple of months maybe I'll see a Google Announcement and or thread announcing Google has implimented some form of my suggestion.

WHAT THE?!?! Man, I better get off the computer. I think they are starting to zero in on m

Sorry le_gber, my humor quotient was low for the weekend.

Guess I get a bit bored when this update topic comes up because the way I see it is that Google is a company with aims and objectives, and they have the right to do updates as and when they see fit.

I know that updates are important to all of us, but at the end of the day we should be making our businesses viable away from Google. Dependency on one technology is never a good thing, be it dependency on one browser, one language, one revenue stream etc.

While I am a big fan of Google and the way they do business, just think that our businesses are better served by us if we diversify a bit. IMHO.

Hi GG, nice to see you again and good defense of your spam policies. I think this whole "spam report fever" thing is pretty silly. Everybody just relax about it, will you, they (Google) are obviously working on the problem but I doubt it's as easy as people think. Give them time.

GG, would you care to comment on this thread

[webmasterworld.com...]

about the Google matrix? Have you implemented this stuff yet, or is it in the works? Can you give us any hints on what it means to us? Do you know any linear algebra?

No Pbs!

200% agree, though 1 small remark ... if you try to sell SEO to companies it helps to be number 1 in SERP :), but I'm not only selling that and I kicked myself to go back customer's hunting because I spend too much time on this forum (not wasted time mind you Brett)

I've just launched another new web site. I did some research on 'keyword mytown' in Google and found the sites in the top positions are all using redirects, cloaking, hidden links - you name it, they are doing it ;).

The hard part for me is that I am a genuine supplier of this service in this location. These other sites are not local providers but are using these methods to drive traffic to them.

I have used the Google spam reports before but it is hard to maintain a positive attitude when there are so many sites clearly abusing the guidelines. In this case I don't think I have the time or the desire to fill all those reports out!

Googleguy, how about a spam report with space to report on 10 sites at once? :).
