Googles refreshing behavior

Could anyone tell me what Googles routines are these days. we seem to be spidered every weekend, but the index only seems to be refreshed once a month. Am I right? can anyone tell me when I need to have made changes to my site to be included in the refresh and what the monthly dates for googel activities are.

Just waiting for the time to come where major index updates were a thing of the past and Google moved to real-time freshness.. I am sure its in the works..
