Hello,

i just want to ask those who understand SEO and how Google works as to why a Web site that has got literally, nothing to do with a search i did, could land on the number 2 spot in the results?
here is the search i did on Google on "(country) web design company" and a Web site that manufactures and sells "(artifacts from that country)" lands on the #2 spot?

Thanks for any explanation you can give me.

yours,
jon

it may have relevance to 3 terms in the query -[country name], Design, and Company. They probably also have the word "web" there a lot too. Maybe even "web design" on page? - are they offering to design web sites for people selling [country]-made products like this.

If they have got good incoming links and are well optimized and sites which are more relevant to the phrase as such dont have incomimng links or have been caught in spam filters im not surprised. What are the other listings in the top 10 or top 20 SERP's. A coulple of "misses" is OK i would say from a searcher perspective.

Keywords do not have to appear onthe page you see on order to rank well. Some of the reasons for this can be:

- Cloaking - showing something different to the engines than what you see

- Content has changes - when Google indexed the page the keywords where there

- Lots of incomming links with the keywords in link-texts

It was easy to find the site in question based on your handle. :)

You can look at the disk cache on your PC to view this site's code, which has been cloaked with "Browser Detective". It is an ugly example of keyword loading, but I think it is just an unfortunate combination of a few mentions of "web site" or "website" and your country name that cause this problem. The site already ranks #1 if you search for <type of furniture> and I cannot accuse them of intentionally trying to hijack your place.

So many sites use the phrase "web site", that adding "design" for any reason causes such an effect.

I submitted a Dissatisfied with Search Result form to Google.

Chiyo,

They have 336 back links, mainly reciprocal links from craft pages. They have an Add a Link facility that seems to be very popular.

this sort of thing often happens in a non competetive area where the returns are low.
