constant fluctuations in page count in google index

what is the basis for constantly changing allinurl?

I apologize if this topic has already been covered, but I couldn't find anything about it in the FAQ.

Every few days I check my site using allinurl -- and the numbers are all over the place, ranging from 1900 to 2400 pages. I generally get the same result when I check on the same day, but a day or two later I will get a completely different result.

There was an alternate way of checking for how many pages you had in the google index listing in the FAQ -- but it gave the same results as allinurl.

Why the big fluctuations up and down? I could understand if freshbot picked up a few more pages during the month, but the number of pages in the index appears to go up and down in an unpredictable manner.

I assume this is what everyone else sees happening with their own sites.

Yes this can happen frequently, also related to as the "everflux" effect, or the effect of Google frequently adding "freshly" spidered and indexed content.
